Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
