Senate Approves Measure to Disclose Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will require the publication of case documents concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

This legislation next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president indicated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Though the president has for an extended period dismissed the outcry over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their supporters who were seated in a public section, cheered after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who expressed concern he feared the measure would reveal identifying details of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
