Tehran is willing to resume nuclear talks with the United States as long as it is approached with "dignity" and "honor", Iran's foreign minister has announced.

Abbas Araghchi said exclusively dialogue produced results, and revealed recent overtures had originated from go-betweens to resume discussions with the American leadership. He asserted Iran possessed no unreported enrichment locations, and Iran could not yet allow the global atomic watchdog to inspect bombed nuclear sites for safety concerns.

Navigating a Challenging Path

Araghchi is treading a complex path since Iran wishes not to be seen to be acting from a stance of weakness, and he emphatically stated that Iran had arisen more resilient militarily and emotionally from the Israeli-US attack on its nuclear sites in June.

He was addressing at a defense forum in Tehran where he restated that Iran had "an absolute privilege to enrich uranium within its borders that it will always maintain" – the key factor of the stalemate in the earlier negotiations.

Earlier Negotiations Unexpectedly Terminated

The prior phases of talks between the United States and Iran were concluded unexpectedly and bitter end on 12 June when the Israeli government, with Washington's assistance, struck Tehran's atomic facilities in a two-week conflict that culminated with the US president declaring the facilities had been eliminated. Subsequently, European countries exercised their privilege to restore international penalties, but Iran maintains they have not had a significant effect.

Magic Solution Proposed

Tehran representatives claimed they felt they had attained a "perfect agreement" to the nuclear fuel concern in earlier negotiations, when it was decided an Iran-based consortium with Washington's engagement could enrich uranium. Each party would have been able to assert triumph since local refinement would have continued and the US could be confident that Iran's enrichment initiative was solely for peaceful purposes.

It had not been agreed in the discussions that US nuclear scientists could function within Iranian territory, but that was a reasonable assumption of the cooperative offer. Officials asserted on multiple occasions they had secured an understanding with the US representative Steve Witkoff only for the agreement to fall apart due to "detractors in America".

Present Position

Iranian officials said the consortium offer was now withdrawn, but it seems quite possible the proposal could be revived in certain ways if negotiations resume.

Trump in recent days claimed he had been getting signals that Iran desired to restart talks, but confidentially Iranian officials claim they are not yet obtaining clear proposals from Washington either straightforwardly or from key regional mediators, such as Qatar, Egypt, the Omani authorities and Saudi Arabia. The Iranian foreign ministry has been criticized of inactivity in the face of the US president's straightforward manner, but Tehran says diplomacy is not part of a spectacle.

Political Stance

In his speech to the forum, aimed to portray the US as a controlling nation that exploits the concept of global regulations, Araghchi declared the fortnight-long engagement revealed the conflict could not be ended by military means. He stated the strikes started with a American requirement for an total Iran submission and culminated with an absolute demand for a ceasefire.

Every aspect of our defense have been restored. We learned numerous insights from this conflict; we have identified our personal limitations and the weaknesses of the enemy."

He continued: "We successfully passed this conflict. Our enrichment knowledge, which they aimed to obliterate, continues to exist. The facilities and machinery, if destroyed, will be restored; what is essential is the determination of the nation of Iran and then the social solidarity that they sought to undermine, but failed to destroy. The nation of Iran have grown more powerful, more integrated, and more supportive of the leadership and the nation in the face of this attack."
