Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
