The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
